Diesel Aluminum Hydraulic Oil Tank Repair

This diesel Tow Truck jack-knived and ripped a cut into this aluminum hydraulic oil tank. This rig couldn't sit and wait two weeks for a replacement tank on order.

They drained the oil below the damaged area and Welded with our Super Alloy 5 and an oxy-acetylene torch. The guys had the room so they made the weld right on the truck.

End result? A $400.00 aluminum tank repaired in seconds with 50 cents worth of Alloy 5--and thousands of dollars saved in lost downtime.

TIPS

Thick aluminum requires oxyacetylene, oxypropane, oxynatural gas, or oxyMapp gas to heat the base metal to the required 600 degrees. If your flux is not liquifying, it is because your base metal is not hot enough.

Heat the base metal first, then the base metal and the rod.

Aluminum dissipates heat quickly, so it's important to keep the flame broadly moving to ensure your base metal stays above 600 degrees. Always keep your flux bottle as close as possible to the repair area, because every time you move your torch away, the aluminum drops approximately 100 degrees per second.
